It Takes Many Talented People to Maximize Data

The advent of big data and those who can interpret it have created experts in data science who can ask the most relevant questions and decipher the results. Some corporations are willing to pay a lot of money to these data analysis stars. Despite their talent and vision, these scientists may need help in communicating their data to the appropriate decision-makers. Unfortunately, their expert roles as data scientists do not necessarily make them great data communicators.

Lost In Translation

Explaining complicated concepts to executives may result in disappointment for all parties. The scientist presents useful, insightful data that is misinterpreted and ignored by his superiors. And the executive misunderstands the data and therefore, ignores useful insights.

Build A Talented Team

To avoid these breakdowns in communication, a successful data operation team should include additional talent in subject matter expertise, project management, design, and storytelling with data. Combining these specialties will result in useful, pertinent information, and executives who will be more receptive to it.

Subject matter experts know the company and its objectives. Their insights will inspire hypotheses and pose important questions. Efficient project management will bring organization and focus to the team so that all members are on the same page. A good designer will create visualizations that are clear, concise, and convey the vital data that has been discovered. Finally, creating a narrative around the data visualization and important data discoveries help the team create stories that resonate with their audience, thereby helping them digest and understand the complicated information.

Despite huge investments in data science, some companies are not maximizing their data operation departments. It takes many talents to maximize data:

• Knowing the business and posing pertinent business questions,

• Creating valuable data experiments, and analyzing the data,

• Keeping projects organized and focused

• Interpreting and designing useful visualizations, and

 • Telling engaging stories about the data.

Data operations teams that contain these components will be more successful at discovering useful, pertinent data and getting executive buy-in as well.
